Deborah Powell

CWAMS is deeply saddened to share the passing of Dr. Deborah “Debbie” Powell, a founding Board member, visionary leader in academic medicine, and steadfast advocate for women in science and medicine. She died on October 30, 2025.

Her obituary captured her legacy in a single line that speaks to who she truly was:
“Dr. Deborah E. Powell will be remembered not only for the barriers she broke but for the generations she empowered.”

Dr. Powell’s career was extraordinary. A pathologist by training, she became Dean of the University of Kansas School of Medicine and later Dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School, where she was the first—and remains the only—woman to hold that role. Nationally, she served as the first woman to chair the AAMC Council of Deans, chaired the AAMC Board of Directors, and was elected to the National Academy of Medicine. She also shaped physician training through her leadership as President of the American Board of Pathology, Chair of the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Pathology, and as an ACGME Board member.

Her innovations in medical education—including the Flexible MD Program and the EPAC competency-based pathway—redefined what training could be: more flexible, more humane, and more aligned with learners’ strengths. These programs became national models and reflected her belief that education must evolve to serve students and society better.

At CWAMS, Dr. Powell’s influence was profound. From our earliest days, she offered wisdom, clarity, and unwavering support. As an advisor in our Faculty Network, she guided women faculty with remarkable patience and insight. She understood the isolation that often accompanies leadership and championed the creation of strong communities for women advancing in academic medicine. She also helped shape early GEMS Alliance programs for pre-medical students—always thinking about the next generation.

Dr. Powell leaves a legacy defined by courage, mentorship, and a belief in people’s potential. CWAMS is stronger—and countless careers brighter—because of her leadership and her heart.

We invite colleagues, mentees, and friends to share your remembrances as we honor a remarkable woman who lifted others every step of the way.

May her memory continue to empower the generations she championed
