Dr. Joanne Conroy is the President and CEO of Dartmouth Health, a position she has held since 2017.  An exceptional leader, she is the 2024 elected Chair of the Board of Trustees of the American Hospital Association (AHA), an organization with a rich history spanning more than 175 years, and now representing approximately 5,000 hospitals and 43,000 individuals. The AHA is dedicated to advancing the health of all individuals and communities. Notably, Dr. Conroy follows in the footsteps of Sister Irene Kraus, who became the first woman Chair of the AHA Board in 1980 while serving as the CEO of DC’s Providence Hospital. Dr. Conroy joins a select group of women who have played pivotal roles in shaping healthcare agendas over the past five decades.

Dr. Conroy’s career commenced at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where she began as an anesthesiologist and steadily ascended through the academic ranks to eventually become department chair, president of the medical staff, and senior associate dean of the MUSC College of Medicine. Her extensive leadership experience includes serving as the CEO of Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, Chief Health Officer of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and President/COO of Morristown Medical Center.

A graduate of Dartmouth College’s second gender-integrated class, Dr. Conroy returned to New Hampshire’s premier health system with a commitment to enhancing access to state-of-the-art medical care for patients in the region. A staunch advocate for advancing women into leadership positions, she is a founding member of Women of Impact, a group of female healthcare executives dedicated to addressing the complex challenges within healthcare and empowering women as agents of change.  She has been a member of the CWAMS Board (Center for Women in Academic Medicine and Science) since the organization’s inception in 2018.

Dr. Conroy’s significant contributions have garnered recognition from several prestigious organizations such as Modern Healthcare, Becker’s Hospital Review, and the Leapfrog Group.  As Chair of the BOD of the AHA during the coming year, among the many priorities of the organization, she will particularly highlight the challenges and opportunities of rural healthcare – an issue she knows all too well in her role as CEO of Dartmouth health.
